5/31/2011 --- Hilton Head Humane Association (HHH) has a spay/neuter program for cats and dogs.  These are wonderful programs to reduce the population of homeless cats/kittens/dogs/puppies in Beaufort County.  Please be respectful of the process so these programs can continue on and on.  We and our furry friends desperately need it.
PS: The HHH processes may change at anytime so call HHH to make sure you understand the current processes and requirements.
Cats
HHH has a FREE spay/neuter program for feral or homeless cats.  This is how it works:
You need to call for an appointment.  The phone number is 843-681-8686. They do a maximum of 30 cats/kittens every Monday except holidays.
They test for feline leukemia. If the cat is positive, they will put the cat down.  If it is negative, they will spay/neuter and give a distemper and rabies shot.  They will clip the ear to indicate to animal control and others that the animal has been fixed. If you make an appointment but are unable to catch your homeless cat, call to cancel your appointment.
The drop off time is exactly 9:30AM every Monday except holidays.
The pick up time is exactly 4PM that same day.  The cat/kittens cannot stay overnite.
Safety requirements:
(1) The cat/kitten MUST be brought in a heart-healthy trap.  If you don't have one, HHH has one you can borrow for a refundable deposit fee of $50. If you bring the cat in a carrier, you will be sent away. Make sure it is in a trap.
(2) You need to provide a carrier for the cat at time of drop off. The cat will be returned to you in a carrier. If you do not have one, HHH will provide one to you that MUST be returned.
(3) If you forget to bring a carrier during drop off, you cannot try to put the cat in your carrier upon pickup in the parking lot so you don't have to drive back HHH to return the carrier.
Dogs
HHH has a spay/neuter program for pre-qualified families (e.g., Low income, students, military, unemployed) with dogs. They will spay/neuter and provide a microchip for $5.00.  You need to call for an appointment.  The phone number is 843-681-8686. They do it on Wednesday and Thursdays by appointment.  You cannot just show up.  In addition, they have extended the spay/neuter program to anyone who has a family pet that is a dog breed that has been stereotyped. (e.g., pitbull, rottweiler).  You must call for an appointment.
