Our Adoption Process

HAL aims to make this experience as friendly as possible. To get started:

  • Take a look at our cats and dogs.  They are on Petfinder. This link is also in our top horizontal navigation for easy access. We have also placed them on Adopt-a-Pet for added visibility.cyrus_starfish
  • Do some research before you adopt. Check out our Adoption Tips.
  • Complete our Adoption Application form. It should take you about 15+ minutes to complete the form. There are about 25 questions. Some of the questions may not need to be answered based on your circumstances (e.g., you live alone or you don't rent). Some are yes and no questions.  Your answers will help us match you with the right HAL cat or dog and help you make sure you have a successful adoption.   We will then call you to arrange an in-person visit with your desired cat(s) or dog(s) .
  • Visit some of our dogs/puppies in person by attending one of our Adoption Fairs. You can fill out an Adoption Application form upon arrival or you can fill it out in advance and bring a completed form to the Adoption Fair.

Why Adopt from the Humane Association of the Lowcountry (HAL)?

Our dogs, cats, puppies and kittens receive sanctuary with HAL foster families. By adopting one or more of them into your home, you make space available for our foster families to take in more animals and save more lives.  For an adoption fee of $80,* you will take home a cat that has received the very best medical care and evaluation. Every cat that leaves HAL has been:beckys face

  • examined by a veterinarian
  • spayed/neutered
  • fully vaccinated for their age
  • tested for FeLV
  • treated for worms, fleas, ear mites, etc.

For an adoption fee of $80-200,* you will take home a dog that has received the very best medical care and evaluation. Every dog that leaves HAL has been:

  • examined by a veterinarian
  • spayed/neutered
  • fully vaccinated for their age
  • tested for heartworms (dogs/puppies over 6 months)
  • treated for worms, fleas, ear mites, etc.

For a nominal fee, you can have your new pet micro-chipped. This will help you become reunited with your pet if your furry friend goes missing.

* We ask for an adoption fee to help us cover some of the costs we incur in medical expenses, immunization and caring for each animal (food, litter, toys etc). All donations and adoption fees go directly to the animals. Everyone in HAL is a VOLUNTEER.  No one is paid or compensated.

dog4Note: Our cats/dogs like most shelters are termed "random source." This means that we accept animals from all sources including stray, abandoned, and homeless animals. THERE IS SOME RISK IN ADOPTING AN ANIMAL from any shelter or humane organization since frequently we have no background information on the health and temperament of an animal or the information given to us in inaccurate. We attempt to evaluate all incoming animals for health and temperament problems; however, thorough health screenings are not provided. Often certain types of problems will not demonstrate themselves until the animal is in a home situation or until a specific time period has elapsed (as in the incubation period of certain viruses). For these reasons, WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THE HEALTH OR TEMPERAMENT OF ANY ANIMAL and urge the owner of a newly adopted animal to bring the animal to a veterinarian for a thorough health screening as soon as possible.
